We’ve struggled to come up with the right words for the effect that Archie Faulks’ new single ‘What For’ has on us. Yes, the irony as a music blog had not escaped us, but somehow our speech has. ‘What For’ is so emotionally, sonically and lyrically dense that it’s a real task to pull apart the threads of the woven pop perfection. Then, it’s further embroidered by a BOOTS-esque production and laced with folksy guitar and cinematic strings. In spite of all of this texture, Faulks retains the singer-songwriter core of his song, reinforcing the personal touch that his evocative vocals naturally possess. No doubt there’s one word if any to use in describing ‘What For’ - comfort.
